FlashTube – YouTube AI Summarizer Privacy Policy

Introduction

FlashTube („we”, „our”, or „the extension”) is a browser extension that helps users summarize YouTube videos using AI platforms. This Privacy Policy explains how FlashTube handles user data.

Our core principle: FlashTube does not collect, store, or transmit any personal user data to our servers. We don’t have servers. All data processing happens locally in your browser.

Data We Do NOT Collect

FlashTube does not collect, store, or have access to:

  • Personal identification information (name, email, address)
  • Financial information or payment data
  • Health information
  • Authentication credentials or passwords
  • Location data
  • Browsing history outside of YouTube
  • User activity tracking (clicks, mouse movements, keystrokes)
  • Private communications
  • Any data for advertising or marketing purposes

Data Processed Locally

FlashTube processes the following data locally on your device only:

YouTube Video Data

  • Video title and URL (from the currently open YouTube page)
  • Video transcript/captions (publicly available subtitle data)

This data is:

  • Extracted only when you click the FlashTube button
  • Processed entirely in your browser
  • Sent directly to your chosen AI platform (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity) via a new browser tab
  • Never transmitted to FlashTube servers or any third parties

User Preferences

  • Selected AI platform preference
  • UI language setting
  • Button appearance and position settings
  • Keyboard shortcut configurations
  • Custom prompt templates

These preferences are stored locally using Chrome’s chrome.storage.sync API, which syncs settings across your Chrome browsers if you’re signed into Chrome. This is a standard Chrome feature and the data remains within Google’s Chrome sync infrastructure — FlashTube has no access to this synced data outside your browser.

Third-Party Services

FlashTube opens the following third-party AI platforms in new browser tabs:

  • OpenAI ChatGPT (chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com)
  • Anthropic Claude (claude.ai)
  • Google Gemini (gemini.google.com)
  • Perplexity AI (perplexity.ai)

When you use FlashTube:

  1. The video transcript is prepared locally in your browser
  2. A new tab opens to your selected AI platform
  3. The transcript and prompt are passed to that platform

Important: Once data is sent to these AI platforms, it is subject to their respective privacy policies. FlashTube has no control over how these platforms process your data. We encourage you to review:

YouTube Data API (Optional) FlashTube may use the YouTube Data API (googleapis.com) as a fallback method to fetch video captions when standard extraction methods fail. This is a read-only operation to retrieve publicly available caption data. No user credentials are sent, and no data is stored.

Permissions Explained

FlashTube requires the following browser permissions:

Data Security

Since FlashTube does not collect or store user data on external servers, there is no centralized database that could be breached. All data remains on your local device or within the AI platforms you choose to use.

Your locally stored preferences are protected by your browser’s built-in security mechanisms.

Children’s Privacy

FlashTube does not knowingly collect any data from children under 13 years of age. The extension does not collect personal data from any users regardless of age.

GDPR Compliance (European Users)

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA):

  • Data Controller: FlashTube does not act as a data controller as we do not collect personal data
  • Data Processing: All processing occurs locally on your device
  • Your Rights: Since we don’t collect your data, there is no data to access, rectify, or delete from our systems
  • Third Parties: When you use AI platforms through FlashTube, those platforms act as independent data controllers

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the „Last updated” date at the top of this policy. Continued use of FlashTube after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Open Source Transparency

FlashTube’s functionality can be verified by examining the extension’s source code. We do not obfuscate our code, allowing users and reviewers to confirm our privacy practices.
